Tuesday, March 8...Alcatraz Island

We started off the morning by taking the BART into San Francisco where we went on a tour of Alcatraz!
We got off the BART at the Embarcadero station across from the Port of San Francisco and walked to Pier 33, where the Alcatraz cruises leave from.

On our way to Alcatraz (Rita Wilson and her and Tom Hanks' son were also on the boat with us!)

Golden Gate with a little sun and fog...

A view back toward San Francisco...

Alcatraz was first used as a Fort during the Civil War and as a wartime prison, then a Federal Penitentiary and then inhabited by Native Americans in the 1970s...

Inside the building that used to be the Civil War Fort and also inhabited by the Officer's families.
The brick is original from the Civil War...

The Pen and its rickety stairway...

We're going in....

The infamous Al Capone's cell

Welcome to D Block, used for Solitary Confinement

Isolation Rooms

These rooms are totally creepy and gave me goosebumps...

Library, the prisoners were allowed to have 12 books at a time in their cells...

Famous attempt to escape, known as the Battle of Alcatraz...

Officer who gave his life, so that the prisoners could not get the key to the door outside and escape...
This is the cell where he was killed.
